These scholarships target high school seniors in the Times' audience area who have a demonstrated interest in pursuing journalism as a major in college and as a career. The scholarship is worth $2,500 per year and may be renewed annually. Four winners are selected each year. Students from these Florida counties are eligible to apply: Pinellas, Hillsborough, Pasco, Hernando, Citrus.
Part 1: Complete and sign the questionnaire (2 pages)
Part 2: In a short essay (500 words), describe your journalism experience. If you do not have such experience, explain why you are interested in journalism as a career. Also, provide a PDF/Word document of your resume of achievements/awards.
Part 3: Attach a letter telling 1) which college you plan to attend, 2) total cost of education for that institution, 3) other financial aid for which you have applied or that you know you will receive, 4) anything else pertinent to your family's financial situation.
Part 4: Preferred: The link to your website. Or, a portfolio of your work (writing, website, photography, design, videos); no more than 5 examples. Scan as PDF files. If you do not have previous journalism experience, attach 3 short (500 words) examples of your writing for class assignments.
Part 5: Three letters of recommendation, written by teachers (or others) for whom you have done a substantial amount of writing. Each letter should have, at the top, your name, the teacher's name, teacher's e-mail and phone number. In the letter, your teacher should discuss your writing ability, your strengths as a student, your character, areas in which you need to improve and how you have demonstrated your interest in journalism
