With Veteran’s Day quickly approaching, what better way to honor our U.S. military members and their families than to shine a spotlight on the scholarships and grants available to them? Military life often presents unique challenges that can be overwhelming for the entire family. Lengthy deployments and frequent changes of station are just a few obstacles military families face, but their strength and perseverance through these hardships is truly remarkable. As a way to honor their sacrifices, Scholarships.com offers a wide variety of grants and scholarships to help offset the cost of college as they pursue their educational goals.

Private organizations across the United States offer scholarships to those who have served in the United States Armed Forces, and their dependents. Although we commonly hear about nationwide opportunities, there are many other scholarships that vary by state or region. Your eligibility can also depend on your military branch affiliation. Since the criterion for each one varies, it is important to carefully read the description to ensure that you meet the requirements and are eligible to apply.

What Scholarships are Available to Children of Military Members?

Do you know a child of a service member between the ages of 13-18 who displays outstanding leadership skills and volunteerism? These individuals can be nominated by a friend or relative for the Military Child of the Year Award, where one winner from each branch of the military will be selected to receive $10,000 and will be invited on a trip to Washington D.C. to accept their award. Many more scholarships and grants are available to children of military members, with the majority of them designated toward high school seniors, like The ASUS, Inc. Scholarship Program and The Kim and Harold Louie Family Foundation Scholarship Program.

Many organizations give special consideration to survivors of military personnel who passed away in the line of duty. The Veterans United Foundation Scholarships places priority on dependents who have lost their loved one due to military-related service. The Purple Heart Foundation also grants academic scholarships to Purple Heart recipients and their dependents.

Opportunities for Women in the Military

Organizations like the Women's Overseas Service League grant scholarships specifically to female military members pursuing a college degree. Women of any military branch can apply for this opportunity. In addition, the Army Women's Foundation Legacy Scholarships offer female Army soldiers, past and present, up to $3,000 toward their education.

Scholarships for Veterans

Oftentimes, when veterans are honorably discharged from military service, many are looking to transition into a fresh career, but they need to first acquire new skills to to enter the civilian job market. Check out scholarships like the Veterans Scholarship Program and the KnowBe4 Military, Veterans & Spouses Cybersecurity Scholarship, which are available to help lighten the financial burden of college expenses as veterans (and their dependents) work toward their degree in a new field.
