Despite being voted the top choice for a fast-food restaurant last year at the college, Chick-fil-A will no longer be a restaurant franchise option at Rider University "based on the company's record widely perceived to be in opposition to the LGBTQ+ community." The decision to remove Chick-fil-A as a new restaurant franchise option "required a difficult assessment of competing interests."
Chick-fil-A did not respond to the university's open letter on the issue but rather, in an email to Atlanta Business Chronicle, stated that it is a "restaurant company focused on food, service, and hospitality, and our restaurants and licensed locations on college campuses welcome everyone. We have no policy of discrimination against any group, and we do not have a political or social agenda. More than 120,000 people from all different backgrounds and beliefs represent the Chick-fil-A brand." Chick-fil-A is one of the fastest-growing restaurants in the country, with locations in 48 states and possible expansion into Canada.
While Rider University states that some may view the decision as a "form of exclusion," it will remain "faithful to our values of inclusion." The university intends on holding a campus forum so that all voices can be heard. In your opinion, should Chick-fil-A be removed as a dining option? Why or why not?
