On this year’s 27th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (MLK) Day in the United States, the national day of service has transformed into an entire MLK Week on college and university campuses around the country to honor the legacy and to continue the work of Dr. King toward greater equality, diversity, and inclusion of all people through nonviolence.

Check out the MLK events happening at colleges this week (some even continue into February) and find out how you can participate at a campus near you. Filled with community service days, commemorative brunches, award ceremonies, and guest speakers, students and staff are coming together to improve their communities and overcome injustice in a peaceful manner. If social action is your calling, take a look at these scholarships that you could be eligible for.

Northwestern University MLK Dream Week

Northwestern University’s Office of Institutional Diversity and Inclusion will be hosting virtual Dream Week events this year from the Chicago campus as well as the Evanston campus. This year’s Keynote speaker is Pulitzer Prize Winner Nikole Hannah-Jones, is an investigative journalist covering racial injustice and author of the New York Times’ 1619 Project, published in 2019. At the candle light vigil, donations will be collected for the March of Dimes and service opportunities will be available for students and community members to register.

Texas Tech University “It Starts With Me” MLK Celebration

Texas Tech’s Celebration Week includes a variety of in-person and virtual events where community members can take part in the MLK Day of Service, visit the MLK Art Exhibit at the university library, attend the Great Reads kick-off event, and participate in community service at the Meals on Wheels Day. University of Nebraska- Lincoln MLK Week

The University of Nebraska’s MLK Committee Members, comprised of faculty and student representatives, presents a wide range of events as well as resources to help students and visitor deepen their knowledge of Dr. King’s message. During this week, students are invited to attend a mentoring luncheon, commemorative celebration (hosted via Zoom), and other special ceremonies. Volunteers are still needed for the MLK Week of Service. The university is also accepting nominations for the 2022 Chancellor’s Fulfilling the Dream Award for students, faculty or staff who have shown exemplary action in promoting the goals and vision of Dr. King.

University of Utah “Becoming the Beloved Community” MLK Week

Among this school's MLK events, one of the most notable is led by prominent leaders in the state of Utah, as well as faculty of the University of Utah. The event, 2045: Towards a More Diverse Future, will discuss the demographic shift in American society, and how we can contribute to shaping a more diverse and beloved community. Community members are invited to attend in-person (though space is limited) and through the live stream link.
