What is Juneteenth? It’s an annual holiday that celebrates the emancipation of slaves. On June 19th, 1865, Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas and formally announced to the enslaved African-Americans that they were freed. Though the Emancipation Proclamation was signed over two and a half years prior, that day was the first time the former slaves knew of their emancipation. Since then, Black communities across America have celebrated Juneteenth with parades, festivals and backyard cookouts, and by waving a distinct red-and-blue flag with a central starburst.
