Burger King took Twitter by storm on Monday with an off-color tweet guaranteed to turn users’ heads. The fast-food franchise’s UK account put out a tweet, saying “women belong in the kitchen” – a well-worn sexist trope that understandably enraged their audience. Though the controversy became widely shared, what you may not know is that the purpose of this tweet was to promote a scholarship for Burger King employees interested in studying the culinary arts.

Burger King is launching the H.E.R (Helping Equalize Restaurants) Scholarship, which will award $25,000 dollars to at least two qualified Burger King employees. Applicants must be current Burger King employees of six months or more who are U.S. citizens. Applicants must be graduating high school seniors or those with a GED who are planning on enrolling in college for the 2022-2023 academic year at a culinary program or university. Financial need, substantial work experience and a personal statement are required to apply. Burger King says it will process the first 50,000 applications, which will be gathered through an online application. Applications will likely open next year, in 2022.

Burger King is one of many fast-food companies that offers scholarships for employees. Starbucks, Chipotle, Chick-Fil-A and Taco Bell offer scholarships or provide employee education benefits, like tuition assistance at online universities.
