$100 Million Grainger Gift Garners New School Name at U of I

The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign's engineering school will soon be called the "Grainger College of Engineering" after receiving another $100 million gift from The Grainger Foundation. The Grainger donation is the largest amount ever gifted to a public university to rename a college.

Alumnus William Grainger graduated from The College of Engineering at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign in 1919 and founded an industrial supply company that employs over 25,000 people across the nation. The Grainger Foundation, based in Lake Forest, Illinois, has committed more than $300 million to the school, with more than $200 million in the last six years. The most recent $100 million unrestricted gift will support educational programs, research, faculty hiring, and endowed professorships as needed. Grainger is also partnered with Illinois Engineering, offering The Engineering Visionary Scholarship for undergraduates, dollar-for-dollar up to $25 million.

The new $100 million gift from The Grainger Foundation is also a part of the $2.25 billion "With Illinois" fundraising campaign for the campus, with the ultimate goal being $550 million, according to Engineering Dean Rashid Bashir.
